Abstract:
Since the introduction of ISO 9000 quality standards, the pursuit of quality assurance has become a
dominant theme in many industries; the construction industry is no exception. Organisations adopt
quality assurance systems to demonstrate their commitment to quality and ability to meet customer
requirements. In developed countries, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Hong
Kong, many organisations in the construction industry have implemented quality assurance systems
based on ISO 9000 or other quality management standards for the above purpose. Sri Lanka, being a
developing country, does not show such a commitment towards quality assurance in the construction
industry; to a certain extent, this is verified by the fact that only a handful of local construction
companies have so far obtained ISO certification.
